Pablo "El Negro" Galiano

GDC 2007

It's been a long time without publishing anything, but I'm back here to tell you about the Game Developers Conference 2007. It was my 5th GDC but first time as a Speaker and not as a CA.

My talk was a 1-hour lecture on Friday 2:30pm titled "Understanding Emotions in FIFA 07: Telling a Different Story Every 90 Minutes". Not too many people attended but we need to consider the fact that it was Friday afternoon -this last day of the conference always feels like a ghost town- and that football, or soccer, is not that popular in North America. Anyhow, I believe it was a good talk with good material. The pretty nice feedback I've got from the attendees -press included- encourages me to continue doing this presentations in the future. Probably GDC Europe is more suitable for talks regarding FIFA.

The conference in general was nice and bigger than ever. Causal games were really strong. It seems that small and independent developers acknowledged the fact that it is extremely difficult to compete with the big publishers moving to the casual gaming market.

I had the opportunity to chat with old acquaintances like Ben Luna, Dan Baker, Peter-Pike Sloan, Fabio Policarpo, Jason Mitchell, and other good people. It was pretty nice to share the conference with old and new friend from the argentinean game developers as well, like Santiago Siri, Daniel Benmergui, Javier Otaegui, and the Tres Melones.
